PURPOSE: To prepare tert-amyl methyl ether(TAME) which is effectively used as an oil manufacture agent and an octane number improving agent by utilizing C5 raffinate fraction obtained when butadiene and light olefin are prepared. ;CONSTITUTION: Methanol and 5C olefin are reacted on a catalyst of acidic smectite clay [preferably acidic montmorillonite-silica-alumina clay of the formula (M is cation of balancing sodium or lithium between lamellas; x, y and n are number; acidity of clay is 3-20 mgKOH/g)] modified by palladium or heteropoly acid (preferably 12-phosphorus tungstic acid, 12-phosphorus molybdic acid, silicotungstic acid, or 12-silicomolybdic acid) at 20-250°C and at 0.1-7.0 MPa of pressure, to prepare TAME with high concentration of, e.g. 53%.
