Combined Production of Tert-Amyl Methyl Ether and Higher Ethers Using CatalyticDistillation

Catalytic distillation as a potential process design for the combined productionof tert-amyl methyl ether (TAME) and higher methanol ethers from the olefin rich FCC light gasoline stream is presented and compared to two other process designs, the conventional fixed bed reactor and distillation design and a special side reactor process design. Simulations are carried out using the FLOWBAT flowsheet process simulator and implementing rigorous reactor, distillation and reactive distillation models and the best available kinetic models for the etherification reactions. Technical and economical feasibility of the three processes is assessed.
