PURPOSE:To release an area used as a temporary filing when system down is generated at the time of using the temporary filing by providing this tempo rary filing area management system with an area security control means for instructing the updating of a catalogue when an idle area description table area securing request is a permanent filing request and other means. CONSTITUTION:The temporary filing area management system is provided with an area securing means 2 for retrieving an idle area description table, and when an area with a specified size can be secured, deleting the positional information of a newly secured area from the table 4, a volume catalogue updating means 3 for writing a file management label or the like in the volume catalogue of a large capacity storage volume 10 having secured an area and the area security control means 1. The control means 1 requests the security of an area with a size specified in response to an area securing request outputted from a program, and when the area securing request is a permanent filing request, instructs the updating of the volume catalogue. When system down is generated at the time of using a temporary filing, the temporary filing and a used area can be released.
