Process for the production of active magnesium hydride/magnesium hydrogen storage systems which reversibly absorb H2, by doping finely divided magnesium with nickel, in which a pressure reactor is charged with a mixture of finely divided magnesium and a sufficient amount of nickel for the doping, tetracarbonylnickel is formed in the pressure reactor and subsequently decomposed, the carbon monoxide is then removed from the pressure reactor, and the resultant doped magnesium is hydrogenated at temperatures of /= 300 DEG C and at superatmospheric pressure, and an apparatus for carrying out the process. …IMAGE…
