PURPOSE:To automatically set a window. CONSTITUTION:When the window is set, a sample work 20 is placed at a 1st attitude, a 2nd attitude... and (n)th attitude and picked up in order, sample image data on the sample work at the 1st attitude is transferred to a window memory 10 and stored, and picture element values of sample image data at other attitudes are compared by a comparing means 9 which has specific comparison logic with data values of data, stored in the window memory, in corresponding addresses. The comparing and updating operation wherein the contents of the window memory are updated according to the comparison results is repeated in order as to the 2nd... (n)th attitudes. The specific comparison logic is comparison logic which leave some of picture element values of the sample image data on the 1st attitude in the data in the window memory which are updated by the final comparing and updating operation without update and the address area based upon the picture element values left without being updated is regarded as a window.
