PURPOSE:To enable an always highly accurate tracking correction operation even when the positional misalignment takes place between returning light from the disk and a photoelectric conversion element. CONSTITUTION:A normal spot position is the position where a beam spot A is located between a land 1 and a group 2 with respect to the recording face of a magnetic disk provided with the land 1 and the group 2 as shown by (i) in the Figure. When the spot A is displaced in the direction of (j), the receiving light quantity of the returning light is increased compared with the (i), and when the spot A is displaced in the direction of (k), the receiving light quantity of the returning light is decreased compared with the (i). Thus, by detecting the increase/decrease of the received light output of the photoelectric conversion element provided to a light receiving port with respect to the reference value, a tracking error signal can be obtained.
