PURPOSE: An optical disk device and a tracking method in the optical disk device are provided to calculate each disk capacity, and to supply an optimal tracking method, thereby reducing the frequency of a re-tracking process while decreasing a tracking time and preventing a wrong operation caused by an incorrect tracking function. CONSTITUTION: An error detector detects a tracking error based on distributions of a received reflected light, while a pickup unit tracks a vertical movement of an optical disk under a control of a driver. A capacity calculator(315) calculates capacities of the optical disk, by corresponding to a size of the calculated tracking error. A tracking controller(320) resets a controlling method of the driver, so that the pickup unit can track an optical disk track, based on the calculated capacities.
