PURPOSE: To improve shelf stability and enable quick reactions and correct quantitative analyses, by letting a reagent contain, in place of iodine, an equal molar amount of iodine halide and salt of a heterocyclic compound containing aromatic nitrogen. CONSTITUTION: A Karl Fischer reagent for measuring moisture is obtained which contains, in place of iodine, iodine halide and salt of a heterocyclic compound including aromatic nitrogen nearly by an equal molar amount, specifically, a ratio of 0.8-1.2:1, preferably 1:1. The iodine halide is suitably iodine chloride or iodine bromide, and the salt of the heterocyclic compound including aromatic nitrogen is suitably hydrohalide salt of pyridine, imidazole or its alkyl derivative or phenyl derivative, preferably, hydrochloride or hydrobromic salt. The reagent considerably quickly reacts in comparison with a reagent containing iodine, and is stable approximately three times a solution containing iodine bromide. Measuring of moisture through a volumetric analysis is carried out by luminous intensity measurement or electric measurement.
