PURPOSE:To efficiently decompose a byproduct to effectively use the same by mixing the solid matter discharged from other process with the carbonaceous adsorbent discharged from a desulfurization/denitration tower and charging the resulting mixture in a separation tower to subject the same to heat- treatment. CONSTITUTION:The solid discharged matter 9 recovered from other exhaust gas treatment apparatus 8 or the solid discharged matter 12 from other process 11 is mixed with the carbonaceous adsorbent 4 discharged from a desulfurization/denitration tower 2 and the resulting mixture is charged to a separation tower 3. When a decomposable substance is contained in the solid matter recovered from the other exhaust gas treatment apparatus 8 or the other process 11, the mixture is heated in the presence of the carbonaceous adsorbent 4 having catalytic action in a reductive atmosphere within the separation tower 3 to be decomposed into CO2, H2O, N2, SO2 or the like. Since the separated or decomposed gas contains SO2 gas in high concn., the SO2 gas is recovered as sulfur or sulfuric acid and the residual solid is discharged from the separation tower 3 to be separated into a powder and a particle by a screening machine.
