PURPOSE:To prevent the overheating damage of a superconductor due to a supply current by detecting the quenching phenomenon of the superconductor at the extremely initial stage of the quenched state thereof when the superconductor becomes the quenched state and cutting off the supply current to the superconductor. CONSTITUTION:When a high temp. superconductor 1 becomes a quenched state in such a state that AC is supplied to the high temp. superconductor 1 and electric resistance is formed, a voltage waveform becomes a strain wave and, as a result, the correlation coefficient of a voltage waveform and a current waveform operated in a correlation coefficient operation circuit 14 becomes a predetermined value and, therefore, a quenching phenomenon discrimination circuit 15 discriminates that the high temp. superconductor 1 generates a quenching phenomenon to output a quenching phenomenon detection signal from an output circuit 16.
