PURPOSE:To prevent the overheating damage of a superconductor due to a supply current by detecting a quenching phenomenon at the extremely initial stage of the quenched state of the superconductor when the superconductor becomes the quenched state and cutting off the supply current to the superconductor. CONSTITUTION:When a high temp. superconductor 1 becomes a quenched state in such a state that AC is supplied to the high temp. superconductor 1 and electric resistance is formed, the voltage waveform formed according to the voltage detection signal inputted to a phase conversion circuit 14 becomes a strain wave and, therefore, the voltage waveform and a current waveform are converted to rectangular waves by a rectangular wave conversion circuit 15 and the operation value of the amplitude of both rectangular waves normalized by a normalizing circuit 16 does not become zero and, therefore, a quenching phenomenon discrimination circuit 18 discriminates that the high temp. superconductor 1 generates a quenching phenomenon and a quenching phenomenon detection signal is outputted from an output circuit 19.
