The invention relates to a plant for generating synthesis gas from coal, using thermal energy produced in a high-temperature reactor, in which the helium-operated intermediate circuit usually used is omitted. The steam gasifier, in which the coal is converted by feeding process heat and process steam into synthesis gas, is heated not by nuclear heat, but exclusively by conventional means, and the steam superheater providing the process steam and a steam generator are arranged in the helium circuit of the high-temperature reactor and accommodated within the reactor pressure vessel. Due to the omission of the components of the intermediate coolant circuit, considerable savings are achieved; moreover, the exit temperature of the helium can be lowered by more than 100 DEG C.
