A dot matrix printer comprises a laterally-movable printing head (8), first and second character buffer devices (4a, 4b), which may be odd and even columns respectively in the same RAM, for storing dot matrix data for one line of characters and dot matrix data for characters which are to be printed in boldface in the same line, respectively, and a print timing pulse generator (11), the pulse repetition period being half the period between pulses that determine standard dot positions. A control circuit (1), when the printing head is making a first pass along a line, causes access of the first character buffer device in synchronism with the odd print timing pulses and, when the printing head is making a second pass along the same line, causes access of the second character buffer device in synchronism with the even pulses.
