In a process for improving the utilization of heat from combustion waste gases containing dust or ash, at least one compound containing the active component of the dust is heated very rapidly to a temperature at least 10 DEG C above its decomposition equilibrium temperature but below that at which the active component melts or becomes inactive. It is then cooled rapidly to a temperature less than 30 DEG C above the original dew point. As a result, the combustion water as well as corrosive noxious substances present in the combustion exhaust gases are chemically bound in crystals formed from the dust particles or the ash. Even after the temperature falls below the original dew point, the dust produced remains dry and powdered and no longer corrodes the heat transfer surfaces. These surfaces remain dry, because no liquid condensation occurs. Fouling and furring on the heat transfer surfaces is prevented.
