A process for the removal of oil deposited on the earthen formation of a shoreline which is abutted from a body of fresh water or sea water which comprises the steps of: contacting the oil deposited on the earthen formation with a surfactant solution for a sufficient period of time for the surfactant solution to penetrate the oil; washing with water the oil and the solution of surfactants from the earthen formation into the body of water, the oil and the surfactants forming lenses or a film on the surface of the body of water; and removing the lenses or film from the surface of the body of water by a mechanical process.
