An automatic implantable defibrillator and arrhythmias recorder comprises external electrodes 164 from which ECG information is transmitted to a delay-type continually updated memory 194 or shift register (not shown). When fibrillation is detected a defibrillating shock is delivered automatically to the heart of the wearer. When any one of several types of arrhythmias is sensed and also when a defibrillating pulse is recognised by a decoder 161 the data in the memory is "permanently" recorded on magnetic tape at 184. An alarm 186 warns when signal level is to low for reliable detection. IMAGE
