Identity card with in-built integrated circuits - provides data signal link via contactless embedded induction coil

The identification card is of the "smart card" type conforming to ISO 7816 norm. When the card is interrogated by a machine, e.g. an access control system, cash dispenser, etc., data is exchanged at 120 kHz between an inductive element in the machine and the coil built into the card. The coil in the card consists of slivers of copper foil (1) seperated from each other by plastics foil (2). The coil is sandwiched between the active electronic components (3) of the card and the edge filling (5). The upper and lower surfaces of the card are plasticised layers which carry printed data, photographs, etc.
