An audio cassette recording and playback head (101) is formed on a substrate (103) and a counter block (105). Magnetic film recording/playback heads (108) are sited between the latter (103, 105) and encapsulated in resin (107) to present the film edge only to the audio tape. The front of the head is shaped for easy tape passage (109, 11), and constructed from hard wearing material such as ceramics. The audio tape is pressed onto the head with conventional spring loaded felt pads.
