The present invention relates to a method for detecting and classifying compounds as inhibitors of the action of c-myc protein, which detects the ability of a compound to inhibit or in some other way interfere with the formation of c-myc heterodimers. Said method involves the evaluation of the ability of said compound to alter the expression of a reporter gene in a host cell, in which the expression of said reporter gene is operationally bound to the DNA bond by said heterodimer to the sequence E2.
