The invention is concerned with surfaces and edges of parts produced from metals, in particular from steel, titanium, aluminium and the like, and their alloys, of winter sports equipment, such as bob skids, sledge skids, ski edges, ice skates or the like, with coated sliding surfaces, surface parts, edges and the like which at least partially bear a layer of hard material. It is endeavoured here to apply to the parts subjected to extreme loading a hard material coating which ensures good sliding properties with long service lives and furthermore requires significantly less mechanical reworking while having good edge stability. This aim is achieved by the layer of hard material having a thickness of 0.5 micrometers to 20 micrometers, preferably 2 micrometers to 10 micrometers, and being formed by compounds of the elements of the 4th, 5th and 6th subgroups of the periodic system of elements and/or with boron and/or with silicon and/or with aluminium and/or with nitrogen and/or with oxygen and or with carbon, or by layers of carbon with a diamond-type structure.
