Abstract of the DisclosureAn inert composite electrode, such as an anode, formolten salt electrolysis consists of an active part inthe form of a plurality of bar-shaped active elements,in particular of ceramic oxide, which are arranged withtheir longitudinal axes mutually parallel and inmutually aligned groups, an electrode holder whichcomprises a current-conducting plate, with one mainsurface wherein the upper end surfaces of the activeelements are in firm contact and a joining arrangementwhich joins the active elements together in groups andholds them in contact with the plate.This composite electrode is characterised in that theactive elements each have a head section adjacent to theplate which is widened in the direction of the endsurfaces adjacent to the plate substantially in a wedgeshape, the plane of the wedge shape lying perpendicularto a line of alignment along which the respective groupsof elements are aligned, and in that the wedging surfaceof a clamping element is brought into contact with eachof the two oppositely-lying wedging surfaces of the headsection of the respective active element, the wedgingangle of the clamping element substantiallycorresponding to that of the respective wedging surfaceof the head section.
