A method for determining Richardson Number, Ri, or itsreciprocal, RRi, for clear air prediction using measuredpotential temperature and determining the vertical gradient ofpotential temperature, d.theta./dz. Wind vector from the aircrart'sinstrumentation versus potential temperature dW/d.theta. is deter-mined and multiplied by d.theta./dz to obtain dW/dz. RichardsonNumber or its reciprocal is then determined from the relation-shipfor use in detecting a trend toward a threshold value for thepurpose of predicting clear air turbulence. Other equationsfor this basic relationship are disclosed together with thecombination of other atmospheric observables using multipleregression techniques.
