In order to improve a process for cutting out a blank (A-G) from a web of material (34) having a pattern repeat (R) in such a way as to obtain a selected blank faithfully reproducing the pattern, it is proposed that a single blank to be cut out be selected and its position in relation to the pattern be detected, the outline (74) of the selected blank be accurately positioned in relation to the pattern in a predetermined cutting region, that the individually accessibly stored outline of the selected blank be allocated a fully defining reference point (80) in relation to the material web, that, when the outline is positioned in exact register in the cutting region, the reference point be given, that the reference point be transmitted to the control computer (32) and that, in the control computer, the stored outline of the blank be accurately positioned in register in relation to the material web by means of the reference point and the blank be cut out by suitably controlling the cutting mechanism (12).
