The device (100) disclosed has a horizontally turning drum (10) on to one side of which the web (1) runs down. Slightly below the point (3) at which the web runs on to the drum, a liquid-impermeable belt (20) which follows the motion of the drum presses against the outside of the web (1) and hence the drum (10), sealing off the nip (9) between the belt and the drum. The two edges of the belt (20) have flanges (25) which engage in grooves (23) in the drum (10), thus delimiting the nip (9) in the axial direction.
