The device (100) comprises a horizontally rotating drum (10) on which the strip of material (1) arrives laterally from above. Slightly below the end point (3) is applied against the drum (10), or against the outer face of the material web (1), a liquid-tight rotating tape (20), which makes the space thus formed (9) sealed downwards. The strip (20) has ridges (25) on both longitudinal edges which engage in grooves (23) of the drum (10) and delimit the space (9) in the axial direction.
