A non-cariogenic microorganism is obtained by subculturing over many generations, a non-cariogenic strain of Human-type type S. mutans which is substabtially positive in the ability to decompose mannitol, melibiose and sorbitol and positive in the reactivity with anti-S. sanguis serum in the gel agglutination, until both said ability to decompose three sugars and said reactivity with anti S .sanguis convert into substantially negative.;The resultant microorganism may be used solely or in combination with at least one naturally-occurring Phase III strain of Human-type S.mutans for preventing or inhibiting dental caries of humans and mammals with good results.
