The invention relates to a method and apparatus for detecting and removing foreign matter from raw cotton. To detect foreign fibres, the raw cotton is X-rayed and the position of the foreign particles is depicted on an image analyser (14). The acceleration voltage of the X-ray tube (15) is set to 8-12 kV and the X-raying takes place at a point at which the raw cotton has been loosened from its starting weight, the result of its having been pressed into bale form, to a fibre tuft weight of about 10-1 to 10-3 g/tuft.
