Compound based on a first element, especially titanium, vanadium or niobium, on a rare earth and on oxygen and in which the first element has at least in part an oxidation number which is less than its maximum oxidation number. The preparation process consists in subjecting a starting compound, which consists of the said first element in an oxidation state higher than that in which it is present in the prepared compound, to a heat treatment in the presence of carbon. Thus, for example, PrTiO3 is prepared from Pr2Ti2O7. It is possible, more generally, to obtain compounds corresponding to solid solutions either of the first element or of the rare earth in a perovskite structure of the PrTiO3 type.
