The drive mechanism is for a tined reel shaft (3,6), having a system superimposing an oscillatory movement on the rotary movement of the shaft. This system is a coaxial one (10), with an intermediate bearing (12) transmitting the oscillatory movement. The reel shaft and the housing of this drive system can be joined together so as to rotate as one. There can be a main drive shaft (7) parallel to the reel shaft, and transmitting the drive to the main drive mechanism via pulleys and belt (11). Oscillatory movement can be transmitted from the main drive shaft via a crank mechanism with connecting rod (14,15,16). ADVANTAGE - Reduced noise level, shaking stones, dirt etc. free from loose hay or straw.
