An electric motor is proposed which is used especially for driving a fan wheel which is seated on a motor shaft. The electric motor is provided with a supply line which opens in the region of an essentially closed motor housing and carries cooling air into the motor housing, the motor housing having a through-opening for cooling air on its one housing wall which is arranged at right angles to the motor rotation axis. Furthermore, the electric motor has a commutating device which is arranged between the said housing wall and the fan wheel. The housing wall has at least one through-opening for the cooling air which is directed onto components belonging to the commutating device. The supply line for the cooling air opens into a chamber which has the through-opening and is arranged in front of the housing wall, seen in the flow direction of the cooling air. In consequence, the cooling air flow is directed onto the components belonging to the commutating device, so that an adequate motor life is achieved even under rugged operating conditions. IMAGE
