In order to test a large number of emergency lights, which are operated via a supply cable and are designed in accordance with the single-battery principle, in an illumination system, the supply voltage is cut off and each emergency light is tested separately, on the basis of a confirmation signal which is emitted from the emergency light, to determine how long the emergency light burns in the battery mode. Once the supply voltage for the emergency lights has been cut off, said emergency lights are selectively and cyclically interrogated with coded signals via the supply cable, and the confirmation signals which are received during the cyclic interrogation and are passed via the supply cable are evaluated centrally.
