The calorimetry process uses a single oven (14) in which the sample and a reference are subjected to a defined temp. programme provided by a control processor (12). Initially the reference is placed in the oven and the measured oven temp. values provided by a temp. sensor (18) are stored to represent the heating load, with subsequent use of these stored values to allow the same heating load to be supplied when the sample is placed in the oven. The actual temp. values for the sample are measured and compared with the stored values to allow a compensation heating to be used to eliminate the obtained difference. The required auxiliary heating load is calculated by the processor. Pref. an open loop regulation mode is used for heating the sample.
