PURPOSE:To ensure an optimum variation in engine torque by enabling at least one out of the working area for change in engine torque and the variation in engine torque to be corrected depending on the detected condition of the pattern select switch of an automatic transmission. CONSTITUTION:In an automatic transmission 2 equipped with a pattern selecting means (pattern selecting switch) which keeps change gear characteristics in a satisfactory condition by a step of changing engine torque by a predetermined variation at the time of speed change, a means which conforms the working area for change in engine torque, is provided. And a means which detects the condition of the pattern selecting means, is also provided. Then, at least one out of the variation in engine torque and the working area for change in engine torque, is corrected depending on the detected condition of the pattern selecting means. This constitution can prevent change in engine torque from being unnecessarily carried out when, for example, an economy pattern is selected.
