Elementary sulphur is produced simultaneously from H2S-contg. gases and SO2-contg. gases by a continuous process in which (a) all the H2S-contg. gas is partially combusted at 800-1400 deg.C in the front region of a first reaction zone, in the presence of an O2-contg. gas (pref. air) in a H2S:O2 mol ratio of less than 2:1 and part of the SO2-contg. gas in a H2S:SO2 mol ratio of more than 4:1, to produce a reaction mixt. of elementary sulphur with a H2S+SO2 amount in the mol ratio 2:1 to 1:10; (b) the remaining SO2-contg. gas is reacted with a reducing gas at 1000-1500 deg.C in a second reaction zone to form a reaction mixt. contg. elementary sulphur and a H2S+SO2 amount in the mol ratio 2:1 to 10:1; and (c) the mixt. of the reaction streams from steps (a) and (b), formed in the rear region of the first reaction zone, is reacted to form elementary sulphur at 800-1300 deg.C without further direct heat supply in an adjoining third reaction zone, the offgas having a H2S:SO2 mol ratio of 2:1 and contg. max. 20 mol % H2S and less than 65 mol % H2O.
