The conditioning and dewatering of sludge is based on adding a ant to the suspension to be dewatered and on mixing. The quantity, size and/or structure of the flockspresent after addition of the flocculant in the suspension are measured continuously or periodically. Depending on these readings, the amount of flocculant, the mixing energy input and/or the spot of theaddition are varied. A pump (3) feeds the sludge from pipe (1) to a filter press (5) via a flowmeter (7), flocculant feed points (9,11), turbulence mixer (13), sludge measuring sensor (15) and branch (17) for a pressure gauge (19). The flocculant (21) is diluted (23) with water (25), controlled by the mixing valve (27) under the direction of the processorr (41) and a microcomputer (43). The latter also control the motor (45) for the dosing pump (35) depending on the signals from the flowmeter (37).
