The end-to-end anastomosis surgical stapling apparatus is actuated in a single step. The apparatus includes a shaft (18) which is able to pull the stapling anvil (20) proximally in one step relative to a stationary housing (13) as well as a plurality of circumferentially disposed balls (41) mounted in cage-like manner in the housing which serve to lock a sleeve (36) relative to the housing. The sleeve (36) carries the staple cartridge (33) and is released to move with the anvil when the anvil clamps the tissue (T) against the cartridge. Thereafter, cam surfaces (25, 43) on the shaft (18) and the sleeve (36) permit the balls (41) to move radially inwardly releasing the sleeve for proximal movement relative to the housing so that the staples (34) pierce the tissue for stapling purposes.
