The appts. restrains a test object (e.g. a vehicle) at a defined position (centre of gravity), using one or more active restraining elements (12,12') acting mechanically on a fixed linkage or restraint with associated controllers. The controllers (60,60') detect static longitudinal and transverse forces which apparently continuously engage the object (9) via the controllers at the centre of gravity (s). The restraining elements (12,12') have associated force (70,70') and displacement (71,71') sensors feeding the controllers. USE/ADVANTAGE - To restrain vehicle at its centre of gravity whilst allowing freedom of lateral, vertical, longitudinal, pitch and roll motion.
