Suspended from the edge of a sewage settlement tank is a channel to receive floating sludge. Pivoted to the channel edge is a ramp. When the free ramp is raised, e.g. by a cable, adjacent sludge collects on the ramp surface and slides down into the channel. Ramp surface is permeable to water but not sludge. The engageable ramp end flange has a downward extension which passes through the sludge layer even when the ramp is in raised position. The ramp may be divided into independent sections round the tank perimeter. ADVANTAGE - Considerably larger area of sludge are removed singly.
