The test generator provides a digitalised test signal with an adjustable noise voltage spacing. A host processor (1) provides a series of sample values representing the test signal, fed via at least one bus to a digital signal generator (4). The latter is coupled via a D/A converter (7) and a low-pass filter (9) to an analogue attentuator (10). The host processor (1) is also coupled to a control module (3), followed by a D/A converter (17), in turn coupled to a noise generator (13) and a second attenuator (14).
