The container (8) has a heater incorporated, and there is at least one outlet aperture (10) at the container lower end closable by a cut-off unit. The hot wax or varnish flows out of the aperture transversally to the direction of movement (4) of the device for distribution over the floor. A smoothing plate (27) is incorporated which locates on the floor (9), and has at least one aperture which can be directed to the outlet aperture of the container to allow through passage of hot wax or varnish. A drive is provided which swings the smoothing plate forwards and backwards against the floor. The container (8) narrows downwards to its outlet aperture (10).
