The motor vehicle has an IC engine which is started by a driven pinion (24) which meshes with teeth (26) formed around the periphery of the engine flywheel. The pinion is mounted on a shaft (34) so that it can slide axially in and out of engagement with the flywheel. The shaft is driven by a compressed air motor (36) which is connected to a compressed air storage vessel (40) by a pipe (38) which is fitted with a valve (42). The compressed air storage vessel is charged by means of a compressor which is driven by the vehicle engine. USE/ADVANTAGE - Engine starting by compressed air from storage vessel.
