Conditioning lightly contaminated nuclear plant rubble - to obtain concrete for concreting waste containers

Conditioning of lightly contaminated nuclear plant rubble is carried out by crushing to a particle size suitable for concrete prodn. and sepg. non-crushable and unsuitable fractions, producing concrete from the crushed particles by addn. of cement, water and binder, pouring the concrete into containers filled with bulky radioactive waste (e.g. waste flask or large components) and then setting the concrete. Novelty comprises (i) sepg. non-mineral fractions, opt. magnetically sepg. steel components and sepg. very bulky components on a sorting be (ii) gravity feeding the rubble from the belt into a jaw crusher; (iii) pneumatically conveying the crushed particles into one or more storage containers; (iv) pouring the particles from the container(s) onto a vibratory screen for sepn. of plastics components; and (v) pneumatically conveying the screened particles into a mixer or a hopper located above the mixer. Equipment for carrying out the process is also claimed. ADVANTAGE - Contamination-free processing of the rubble can be carried out in a fully mobile plant in which combustible fractions are sorted out and the rubble is crushed to a size suitable for use as filler for container cementing.
