Weld prepn. method for welded rails uses mitre-cut ends to avoid the formation of dents in the track surface in the softened decarburised transition zones adjacent to the weld. ADVANTAGE - The formation of dents (i.e. depressions) in the track surface on weld joints is avoided as wheel contact is predominantly on unsoftened material, i.e. the softened transition zones are bridged over. Weld joint strength is increased as weld area is substantially greater than with square cut ends.
