Method of determining the conc. of proteins (I), and of total prbtein, in a body fluid sample comprises: (1) leading the sample past 2 protein-impermeable membranes which are in contact with 2 internal electrolytes (IE) of different concns.; (2) measuring the potential difference (Up) generated on the membranes using a measuring system connected to electrodes dipped in IE; (3) measuring the major ion concns. in the sample; (4) leading 2 protein-free solns. (La and L2) of known ionic cocncs. past the membranes; (5) measuring the potential different (UL1,UL2) generated from these solns.; (6) correctinga Up according to the measurement of steps (3) and (5), then (7) comparing the corrected values with standard values of known protein concns. to determine the protein content. Also new is an appts. for this process. USE/ADVANTAGE - Variations in the concn. of individual proteins in blood etc. are characteristic of kidney and liver diseases; and acute and chronic inflammations, or antibody deficiencies. This method allows total protein to be meausred relatively simply and quickly, pref. continuously, with high accuracy.
