The steel crucible (1) is lined on the inside with a conducting firebrick layer to contain the melt. It has an oval shape with one end with an inlaid copper lining (7) and the other end having a location for the cathode (3). The scrap feed is via a closed tower (11) to allow the scrap to be pre-heated by the exhaust gasses taken off the crucible. The tower has retaining ledges (13) to hold the scrap above the melt for pre-heating. The conducting inlay is taken around the one narrow end of the crucible and forms the arc under the feed of the scrap for optimum heating. ADVANTAGE- Improved process, fixed position for feed chute.
