The hydraulic shock absorber for a motor vehicle has a main cylinder (3) in which a main piston (12) operates. An auxiliary piston (15) extends upwards from the main piston and when the main piston (12) reaches the upper part of its stroke, the auxiliary piston (15) enters the auxiliary cylinder (16). The flow of hydraulic fluid to the upper part of the main cylinder is restricted causing a rise in pressure in the lower part of the cylinder. This rise in pressure opens the valve (19) of the auxiliary piston to allow fluid to flow to the upper part of the cylinder but maintaining a higher clamping force on the main piston.
