Polymeric ammonium salts of mol. wt. 5000-500000 are obtd. by homopolymerisation of monomers of formula (I) or (II) and by copolymerisation of mixts. of two monomers of formula (I)-(III) with a molar monomer ratio of (I):(II) and (I):(III) and (II):(III) of c. 0.5:0.5-0.95:0.05 in the copolymer, opt. with subsequent anion exchange, where R1-R12 and R1'-R12' independently = H, halogen, hydroxyl, prim., sec. or tert. amino, carboxylic acid, carboxylic acid ester, sulphonic acids, sulphonic acid ester, cyano, nitro or a hydrocarbon opt. interrupted by heteroatoms; X- and Y- = stoichiometric equivs. of an organic or inorganic anion or their mixts., and R13-R16 = independently H, Cl, Br, hydroxyl, prim., sec. or tert. amino, carboxylic acid, carboxylic acid ester, sulphonic acids, sulphonic acid ester, cyano, nitro or a hydrocarbon opt. interrupted by heteroatoms.
