Layered double hydroxide salts comprising a mono- and/or divalent metal cation, a trivalent metal cation and an organic anion are used as charge control agents in electrophotographic toners and developers, in powder lacquers, in electret materials and the electrostatic separation of chargeable materials. R1-R9 = CN, (CH2)1-8CN, halo, 1-44C (cyclo)alkyl, mono- or polyunsaturated 2-44C alkenyl, (1-22C)alkoxy(8-32C)alkyl, A'Q, 1-22C carboxyalkyl-alkenyl, 1-22C haloalkyl, 2-22C haloalkenyl, (6-14C)aryl(1-32C)alkyl, (4-14C)heteroaryl(0-32C)alkyl; Q = OH, NH2, 1-12C trialkylammonium, COOA, CONHA, OCOA, NHCOA or ((1-12C alkoxy)0-100)-((1-12C alkoxy)1-100)-6-14C aryl or -4-14C heteroaryl; A' = 1-22C alkylene; A = 1-32C alkyl or aryl optionally interrupted by (O(CH2)1-12)1-20 or (NH(CH2)1-12); R10 = a bond or R11; R11, R12 = A', mono- or polyunsaturated 2-22C alkenylene, 1-22C hydroxyalkylene, 1-22C hydroxycarboxyalkylene, optionally substituted o- or m-(6-14C)arylene, 4-14C heteroarylene or (CH2)nX(CH2)n; n = 1-12; X = X', OCOX'COO, COOX'OCO, NHCOX'CONH or CONRX'NRCO; X' = 6-14C arylene, 4-14C heteroarylene, A' or 2-22C alkenylene; R = H or 1-12C alkyl; R13 = 1-32C acyl, 1-22C alkyl, 2-22C alkenyl, (6-10C)aryl(1-18C)alkyl, heterocyclyl(1-22C)alkyl, 6-10C aryl or 4-14C heteroaryl; R14, R15 = 1-18C alkylene, (1-12C)alkylene(6-10C)arylene, 6-10C arylene or (0-12C)alkylene-heterocyclylene; R16, R17 = H or R1-R9; Z = NH or O; Y = COO, SO3, OSO3, SO2, COS or CS2; R18-R20, R100-R500 = H, 1-22C alkyl, 1-18C alkenyl, O-G, 1-18C hydroxyalkyl, 1-18C aminoalkyl, NH-G, carboxy(1-18C)alkyl, NH2, NO2, CN, SO3H, halo, 1-18C acyl, 1-18C haloalkyl, COG, OCOG, COOG, CONHG, NHCOG, 6-10C arylcarbonyl, CONH2, SO2NH2, SO2NHG, phenyl, naphthyl or heteroaryl; G = 1-18C alkyl; and A-F in rings = CH2, CH, CO, N, N+, NH, NH+, NH2+, O or S, at least one being a C-containing group. An Independent claim is also included for an electrophotographic toner, powder or powder lacquer comprising 30-99.99 wt.% of a binder, 0.01-50 wt.% of a double hydroxide salt as above and optionally 0.01-50 wt.% of a dye.
