The sluice is divided into a dry compartment filled with water. The two compartments are divided, gastight from each other, by a shut-off device. After a differential pressure above 0.01 Mpa between the two compartments has been set, the shut-off device, assisted by pressure, opens and after complete quenching of the ash under pressure, the pressure is released. Some variants are claimed, including the release of pressure being timed to occur with a delay depending on ash grain-size. USE/ADVANTAGE - Ash removal by earlier methods, both dry and wet, has drawbacks overcome by this method, which uses little energy, is mechanically simple, can be automated, and provides easy removal of ash/water mixtures without dust and steam problems.
