The motion of a vehicle is detected using single dimension displacement sensors arranged to produce pulse signals as a sensor carrier moves over surfaces formed in the sensors. Basic elements contg. angle and displacement increments are derived from the series of pulses. Signal patterns obtained from the pulse series are compared with stored patterns and weighted for association with basic elements. Signal patterns corresp. to the base elements are determined in a previous learning phase and stored with error correction weighting factors. USE/ADVANTAGE - For use in vehicle navigation. Enables accurate angle and distance measurement irrespective of construction, manufacturing or installation tolerances.
